The Porsche Experimental Prototype (PEP) from 1985 is one of the most unusual and technically exciting development vehicles in Porsche history. Unlike classic pre-production models, which were built to be as close as possible to the later production version, the PEP served as a multifunctional test platform – a modular system based on four modules, designed for maximum flexibility in the development process.

The PEP consisted of:

• the Propulsion Module (Chassis/Drive),
• the Central Module (driver's compartment),
• as well as front and rear modules ,
  which were freely combinable and interchangeable.

The central cabin consisted of components from various Porsche production vehicles and served as a connecting element for all other modules.

Thanks to this modular structure, Porsche was able to conduct a wide variety of experiments – including:

• Tests with different drive concepts (all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive),
• variable weight distribution ,
• adjustable wheelbases ,
• even the installation of the engine in the front instead of the rear .

This exceptional versatility made the PEP a valuable development tool until it had fulfilled its purpose and the project was discontinued. Today, the Porsche PEP is considered a fascinating rarity of automotive research.
