When GP fans discuss which Formula 1 car was the most beautiful, it always comes up again: the Lotus 72 in the colors of John Player Special. The Type 72 brought to the racetrack in 1970 by ®Mr. Lotus¯ Colin Chapman made opponents look like they were racing a biplane against a jet.

About the original:
The Lotus 72 was a racing car designed and built by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe and used by the British Formula 1 team Lotus from 1970 to 1975. It is still considered one of the most successful Formula 1 cars of all time. It was used until 1975 and won three Grands Prix with Ronnie Peterson in 1974.

The fairing was wedge-shaped, so the radiators were located in the sidepods, where they enabled better weight distribution. At the height of the front axle, the monocoque changed to a partially open, sheet metal-reinforced rectangular tube construction. This was necessary in order to reach the internal front brakes. The brake disks were vented through the typical small chimneys. The brakes were connected to the wheels by shafts Í one of the weak points of the Lotus 72.

Shock absorbers and the torsion bar springs used for space reasons were located in the chassis. The shock absorbers were connected to the upper wishbones via a tie rod. The wishbones were triangular and made of sheet metal.

The cockpit cladding consisted of a one-piece Plexiglas panel that was laid on the chassis. For the first time, most of the fuel tank was located in the middle of the car behind the driver, an arrangement that became established and has been retained to this day. This Lotus 72 - number 8 - was driven at the 1972 British Grand Prix by Emerson Fittipaldi, soon to become world champion. On the winding track of the Brands Hatch Grand Prix, Emerson won with a lead of just 4 seconds over Jackie Stewart's Tyrrell and stormed to the title.
